The Store Studio, Creignish

Welcome to the Store Studio, a local gem filled with handmade gifts created by a group of thirty talented artisans. Visitors will find baby quilts, pottery, driftwood and beach glass, jewelry, resin products, wood turned items and cozy woollen mittens and shawls. There is always a beautiful selection of handmade cards, candles, soaps, and books by local authors including our very own Trena Christie MacEachern’s novels “Light of Day” and ”Karma”. The building itself has its historical roots as an important business in the community.

The Store Studio was built in the late 1800s as a general store by Archibald Mc Master, grand uncle of the present proprietor. Mc Master’s General Store provided the community with everything from food necessities to farming and fishing supplies. In the mid 1930s Archie’s nephew Angus John Mc Master took over the business and operated the store until 1970.

As larger stores opened in Port Hawkesbury and people travelled to the industries which sprang up in Point Tupper, the need for a community store diminished and Mc Master’s General Store was shuttered for approximately fifty years. Angus John’s daughters had careers and raised their families close by, but the idea of reopening “The Store” was always a dream discussed at length at family gatherings, even among the grandchildren.

The building was lightly refurbished, with a view to retaining its original characteristics, by Angus John’s daughter, Peggy. The original intent of the project was to be a weaving studio to house a 45” loom, a newfound hobby in Peggy’s retirement. She quickly realized there were more local artisans anxious to have their work showcased and the dream of reopening the store as the re-imagined Store Studio was realized in the summer of 2017.

Come in and take a step back in time while enjoying the creative works of today’s talented artisans.
